Alzheimer’s Myths

Although most people have heard of Alzheimer’s disease and have at least a vague understanding of the illness, there’s also a lot of misunderstanding about it. Jordan Health Services, anin-home health care provider across Texas, feels it’s important to debunk the myths because recognizing some of the common myths about Alzheimer’s disease can help you understand the condition better.

Myth #1: Alzheimer’s
is a normal part of aging.
It’s true that most
people who develop this disease are over the age of 65, but it is not true that
this is something that everyone will eventually have to deal with.
Forgetfulness and difficulties with cognitive functioning are not something
that everyone experiences to the degree that people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s
do as they age. Most people are able to retain a significant amount of their
cognitive functioning over time as they grow older.

Myth #2: Dementia is
always caused by Alzheimer’s disease.
Memory loss is always
a warning sign of Alzheimer’s and dementia, but Alzheimer’s is not the only
thing that can cause memory loss. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the
disease accounts for 60-80% of all dementia cases, while the other 20-40% of cases
are caused by other factors or diseases. Memory loss should always be taken
seriously, and you should inform your doctor if you or a loved one is
experiencing these symptoms so that a proper diagnosis and treatment can be
made sooner rather than later.

Myth #3: There is no
hope for someone with Alzheimer’s disease.

While it is true that there is no cure for the disease, that doesn’t mean that
certain standards of quality of life can’t be maintained for a significant
amount of time. There are various treatments available that can help slow the
progression of the disease and help sufferers hold on to as much of their
cognitive functioning as they can for as long as they can.

Caring for someone with dementia can be challenging and stressful, especially if the facts about the condition are not understood.  Understanding Alzheimer’s disease is the most important thing you can do when caring for your loved one. Jordan Health Services provides a variety of ways to support you as you care for your loved one, and we would be happy to answer any questions that you have
