Routine and Preventative Care Improves Quality of Life in Pets

Dogs and cats experience many of the same health problems as seen in people. And just as we see with people, unrecognized or untreated health problems can have a serious impact on both quality and length of life. Fortunately for our pets, many problems can be avoided or successfully treated with routine, basic health care.

Regular Exams: Just as regular check-ups are important for us, all pets should be seen at least once a year by their veterinarian for a full check-up. Older pets or those with known health problems may need to be seen more often. Needed vaccinations can usually be taken care of at this same time!

Dental Care: Dental disease, including gingivitis, periodontal disease and infection are among the most common problems seen in our pets. Besides being a significant source of pain (which many pets hide), dental disease can also lead to serious damage to a pet’s heart, liver and kidneys. Oral exams should be part of the physical exam, with specific recommendations made based on exam findings. Treatment of dental disease is especially important in older pets or those with underlying disease.

Early Diagnoses: Problems with liver, kidneys or other internal organs may not be noticeable to pet owners until it is very advanced. Unfortunately, by this time treatment options may be limited. However, if problems are diagnosed early through regular testing (blood work and urinalysis), the chances of a good outcome improve dramatically.

Arthritis: Degenerative joint disease, or arthritis, is another common problem in older pets. Any signs of pain, difficulty rising or decreased activity should be discussed with your veterinarian. Many treatment options are available.

Cancer: With pets living longer lives, cancer has become more common. Any new lumps or growths should be checked to see if they might be malignant. Once again, early diagnosis is the key here as well.

Take Action Now to Prevent Problems Later: It is well known that the companionship of pets improves our quality of life. In exchange for the comfort and friendship they provide, our pets depend on us for their care. By providing proper preventative care, treating problems early and discussing options for treatment of more serious conditions, we are able to greatly improve both the quality and length of life of our wonderful animal companions.
