Hearing Aid FAQ: The Telephone Edition

By Celia McCormick, Aud.D, Family Audiology, Collin County LIVING WELL Magazine

Do I have to take off my hearing aids to use the telephone?

No. New technology includes algorithms that virtually eliminate the whistling feedback associated with holding a telephone next to a hearing aid. Also, many hearing aids are equipped with an automatic telephone listening program. These programs are specifically designed to enhance speech through the telephone.

Can I use my cell phone with my hearing aids?

Yes. Like when using land lines, the new technology that prevents the hearing aids from whistling works
with cell phones as well. Many hearing aids are also compatible with hearing aid specific Bluetooth devices. These
devices serve as a relay between your cell phone and hearing aids and allow you to hear your phone call directly through the hearing aids in both ears.

Are there some telephones that work better with hearing aids than others?

Yes. There are several features that make telephones easier to use with hearing aids. The ability to adjust the volume and tone of the incoming caller’s voice can greatly enhance speech clarity. These amplified telephones are available through a Texas state
program at no cost to patients. Speakerphones are also a wonderful option for hearing aid users.  Utilizing both ears to listen to a conversation allows your brain to better process the incoming speech signal.

Are there some cell phones that work better with hearing aids?

Yes. Cell phones are all rated based on their hearing aid compatibility. Good compatibility means they carry the very highest rating of M4/T4. M4 indicates there is the least likelihood of feedback and T4 means there is the greatest likelihood of an automatic phone program coupling with the cell phone. To learn more about a specific cell phone model, go to www.phonescoop.com or ask your cell phone manufacturer.

If you have specific questions regarding the use of your hearing aids with the telephone, it is always best to consult with your audiologist.
