FDA issues warning about PPIs and C. difficile infections

On February 8, 2012 the US Food and Drug Administration issued a safety alert to physicians and consumers, which stated that the use of PPIs to reduce acid production by the stomach may be associated with an increased risk for developing persistent diarrhea and other GI symptoms due to infection with a bacteria called Clostridium difficile, or C. diff. Read the FDA report. In a related story carried by Reuters, March 6, 2012, reporter Julie Steenhuyse describes the increasing incidence and virulence of C.diff infections.

If you suffer from chronic acid reflux and like nearly 30 million Americans you take PPIs on a daily basis, you should know there are other options. If you “Live Your Life Around Your Reflux“, or if you “just want to stop taking PPIs“, you may be a candidate for a minimally invasive surgical treatment that can help you get off those meds and back to living your life.
