Freedom of the open road on a Harley

Indianapolis South LIVING WELL Magazine

A popular T-shirt worn by many Harley-Davidson riders simply states, “If I have to explain it, you wouldn’t understand.” The statement references the fact that it is nearly impossible to explain to someone who doesn’t ride, what it is like to ride a motorcycle. You just have to experience it yourself to fully understand. So what is it about the mystique of riding these motorcycles that makes you feel like you can’t explain it well enough that a non-rider would understand?

You can start off by talking about how exciting it is going down the road balanced on two wheels. Remember when you finally had the training wheels removed from your bicycle when you were a kid? That same feeling fills you inside when you ride a Harley-Davidson.

How about describing the feeling of freedom you get when you ride? You are out in the wind, unencumbered by the confines of an automobile. No doors, roof, or windows to close you in.

Some like to say you can see more while on a motorcycle. Heading down an open road, you can view everything in front of you, to each side and even above you. Your view is certainly unobstructed.

Maybe the combination of all of the above is what helps contribute to an attitude change when you throw a leg over the seat, and fire that Harley-Davidson motor to life. Nothing sounds like or rumbles like these machines. You sit a little taller and smile a bit more knowing you are heading out on your motorcycle doing something you understand. You get it, but you still can’t fully explain it.

Stop by Southside Harley-Davidson and ask for your explanation.
