A skilled nursing center provides the highest level of care for older adults outside a hospital, including assistance with dining, bathing, dressing, medication, and getting in and out of bed.  Twenty-four hour skilled nursing is provided with the goal of reaching and maintaining the resident’s highest potential and honoring his or her dignity, while providing the necessary nursing care.

In choosing a skilled nursing facility, there are several factors to consider, such as patient-to-staff ratio, dining, activities, accommodations, atmosphere and more—all concerning quality of care and quality of life. Some skilled nursing centers are freestanding, while others are a component of a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) and offer many unique advantages, such as atmosphere, resources, and the convenience of allowing CCRC residents to “age in place” and not have to move elsewhere should their needs change.

For example, The Village Pavilion, a component of Greenwood Village South retirement community, is designed to remind residents of home and has earned a reputation for feeling warm and inviting. “We’re a true family, a community, at The Pavilion,” says Greenwood Village Pavilion Administrator Karen Rumple. “Our goal is to make everyone feel welcome right away.” The Village Pavilion offers rehabilitative services, comprehensive skilled nursing care and specialized Alzheimer’s or dementia care and is open to those who are not already a resident of Greenwood Village.

Also important to consider are the special therapies and programs offered to enhance residents’ lives. The Village Pavilion’s extensive Life Enrichment program encourages resident participation in meaningful and familiar activities such as cooking, music, church services, outings and more. Pet therapy also is provided to those patients dealing with dementia issues.  For those receiving short-term rehabilitation, therapy revolves around assisting each person in regaining skills needed to return back to their regular routine.

Perhaps most importantly, it’s wise to visit a skilled nursing center to see firsthand what sets it apart, and how it feels in general.  “At The Pavilion, our care is person-centered, very professional and compassionate,” says Rumple.  “We really feel we are different, and we would be happy to arrange a tour for anyone interested.”
