HealthSouth Scottsdale Receives Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval™ for its Stroke Rehabilitation Program

By Jennifer L. Kalmer, MD, Board Certified Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Physician at HealthSouth Scottsdale Rehabilitation Hospital, Scottsdale LIVING WELL Magazine

The Joint Commission has awarded HealthSouth Scottsdale Rehabilitation Hospital the Gold Seal of Approval for its Stroke Rehabilitation Program. The hospital is now not only accredited by the Joint Commission as a rehabilitation hospital, in addition it is accredited as a “disease specific” hospital in stroke rehabilitation. The disease-specific care certification was awarded after a comprehensive evaluation during an on-site review. The Joint Commission reviewer assessed the hospital’s commitment to excellence by assessing the following: compliance with the 28 consensus-based national standards; effectiveness at integrating established clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and utilization of an organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.

The Joint Commission, an independent not-for-profit organization, launched its Disease Specific Certification Program in 2002; it endeavors to improve the quality and safety of care provided to the public by awarding accreditation to healthcare and related services.

HealthSouth Scottsdale is a 60-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital that offers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services. Our physician team leaders are board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and monitor and coordinate the patient’s interdisciplinary rehabilitation program. We offer an intense therapy regimen of three hours a day, five to six days a week utilizing state-of-the art technology to advance patients through their rehabilitation program as quickly as they are able. Our mission is to achieve maximum functional independence and return patients home as quickly as possible. This sets us apart from long-term care or skilled nursing facilities in the community.

Receiving this designation was an interdisciplinary team effort that involved input from physicians, physical, occupational and speech therapists, respiratory therapists, nurses, case managers and neuropsychologists. The result is an organized program of guidelines that coordinate the plan of care for the patient. The team meets weekly to evaluate the patient’s progress and ongoing medical and rehabilitation needs and eventual discharge plans. HealthSouth Scottsdale is proud to be able to offer the residents of the this community a higher level of care as families make decisions about the care of their loved ones.
