Spring is here!

Get your home in shape for warmer weather

Along with the beautiful blooms, balmy weather and open windows comes the need for spring cleaning and repairs, the chance to prepare for saving money during the summer to come and the opportunity to learn some valuable information about service providers.

Here are some things to ponder. Was your property damaged in the past as a result of hail, wind and debris? Remember that if your roof was damaged, you should receive a roof of the same quality or better, because that is a requirement for having your new roof insured. If you had additional damage, you may also be able to get new gutters, windows, paint, stucco repair and garage doors.

When interviewing contractors, ask about things like this and also ask for a referral list. Then call those people and check the company’s website. With unemployment rates high, some people will grab a hammer and advertise as a home repair company. The company may only be that person, with few clients to refer them and less actual knowledge about the most efficient and effective ways to rehab and repair. He/she may be turning a hobby into a way to make money. Some of the best around have started that way, and one person may be enough if he knows what he’s doing. But, it’s worth your time to do some research into the person’s background. It’s also wise to familiarize yourself with the prices of supplies, such as lumber, windows and siding, so you won’t be vulnerable when it comes to the price of material and labor.

There are actually people who might take advantage of seniors who aren’t ambulatory or who are hard of hearing, knowing they didn’t understand or are unable to do their own work. Most contractors are reputable, so just take the time to check references and consider having someone with you when meeting with the contractor, so they can witness the discussion and the expectations.

Just know what you want before you meet with the person doing the repairs, so that you aren’t going to be “sold” something additional that will add cost without being necessary. Also get more than one bid and be sure to get that bid in writing. It’s nice to remember the day when you could settle a deal with a handshake. You may still be able to, but just wait to shake hands, after you have laid the pen down you just used to sign a contract.

Important tips for getting your home spruced up for spring.

  1. Clean gutters & down spouts.
  2. Replace all filters in the house (usually less dust in the winter, but did you change them at the end of the fall)?
  3. A quick cleaning of the outdoor air conditioning unit will help with efficiency.
  4. Clean exterior windows.
  5. Clean and treat decks.
  6. Prepare for rodents and other pests, because this is when they are the busiest (this does include pigeons).
  7. Have your air conditioner checked by a licensed, reputable company.
  8. Clean and organize the garage. With a light snow year, there is not as much salt residue to worry about, but sometimes that can be an issue.
  9. Throw out things you didn’t use over the past year and don’t expect to use again.
  10. The next time your house needs painting, remember you don’t have to paint the whole house at once. Consider painting one side at a time year after year.
