Raise your hand if you like to get a shot? Just what I thought? Not many takers. Many of us have a fear of needles and shots can cause some discomfort. But getting vaccinated can prevent diseases that can cause more harm than the shot givens to fight them. Being immunized or vaccinated is essential. They protect against things like measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, polio, diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, also known as whopping cough.
Who should get immunized? It is important for adults as well as for children. Why? Our immune system helps our bodies fight germs by producing substances to fight them. But our bodies also need additional help or reinforcements in the battle against germs. Vaccines contain germs that have been killed or weakened and when administered the vaccine triggers the immune system to respond and build up immunity in our bodies. Before vaccines were available our bodies became immune from a disease by actually getting the disease and surviving it. Fighting off a disease can be a life or death proposition. Getting vaccinated is much easier and less risky.
