Migraines: Exercise can stop the pain!

Migraines: Exercise can stop the pain!

Research has proven that migraine headaches are neurological in origin rather than vascular. In fact, medical studies have demonstrated that migraines are the result of a hyperactive brain.  Current research supports that when the hyperexcitable brain is triggered by a stressor, a cascade of physiological events in the brain is initiated. This cascade of events results in dilation of the arteries in the outer tissue covering the brain known as the dura matter. The dura matter is extremely pain sensitive and the dilation of the blood vessels in the dura matter results in the throbbing relentless pain of a migraine.

The traditional medical approach is to treat migraines with drugs. Unfortunately, even the most effective drugs only work about 50% of the time. The hyper excitable brain is producing too many fast (Beta) brainwaves and in this state the brain is prone to migraines. Any trigger such as stress, hunger, and certain foods can push the brain into a cascade of events that culminates as a migraine. Most suffering with migraines can predict its approach. In fact, one effective preventative measure is to identify and eliminate the environmental triggers. The trouble with that approach is that triggers are hard to identify and even when they are identified, they cannot always be avoided.

The good news is you can learn how to calm the brain and achieve natural migraine relief.  Rather than masking the symptoms, through neurofeedback the source of the migraine is targeted and learning how to calm the brain is taught through non-invasive exercises. Neurofeedback therapy addresses the brainwave imbalance by teaching the brain how to produce the correct brainwaves so the brain can relax. Those who complete neurofeedback therapies for migraines report that while they sometimes can feel a migraine presenting – it never materializes!
