New Medicare Cards with New Numbers

New Medicare Cards with New Numbers

By Tucker Thompson

New Medicare cards began arriving April 1, 2018, and will continue delivery through April 2019. Your card might arrive at a different time than your spouse’s, friend’s or neighbor’s. You do not need to request a new card or do anything special to receive it. It will come to you. Once you receive your new card, destroy your current card with the social security number.

Medicare Advantage members will still use their Medicare Advantage Plan cards. You will also continue to use your Prescription Drug Plan card and your Medicare Supplement Plan card. There will be no change to any of these policy numbers.

BEWARE of SCAMS! Do not pay through e-mail, mail or telephone solicitation for a new temporary card, or to expedite your new Medicare card.

Also, beware of anyone who contacts you about personal or private information to get your new Medicare card number. Hospitals, doctors, health care providers and facilities will ask for you new Medicare card when you need care, not before.

The new card does not impact your Medicare benefits in any way. If your address has changed, you may want to contact Social Security at ssa.gov/myaccount or you can telephone 1-800-772-1213 to give Social Security your new address.
