Hospice: Excellence in Bereavement Care

Avis LaGrange MSW, LCSW, CHA, River Region Hospice, New Orleans LIVING WELL Magazine

River Region Hospice understands that losing someone you love is a life altering experience. Each of us journey through this process we commonly call grief in our own way and at our own pace. This process is a normal reaction to the death of an individual.  Grief may also be anticipatory in nature when we mourn the loss of a loved one prior to physical death. Every part of our being may be affected including the physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual, and social domains.

River Region Hospice values the importance of each patient and family for whom we provide hospice services. River Region Hospice provides compassionate and understanding bereavement care to those experiencing the death of a loved one. After thorough assessment our highly skilled team of professional social workers and chaplains formulate a bereavement treatment plan for each family unit. Counseling and community resource referrals are commonly utilized in caring for bereaved family members. By receiving bereavement care, survivors are able to successfully assimilate the loss into their lives, form new relationships and live happy, rewarding lives. Bereavement services are available for up to one year after a loved one has died.

River Region Hospice encourages survivors to keep memories of their loved ones alive and use them as a source of comfort during their time of bereavement. River Region Hospice supports this goal through its Annual Memorial Service. Family members of all who died during the previous year are invited to take part. Survivors are encouraged to participate along with the hospice staff in our candle lighting ceremony and balloon release during the memorial service. Their loved ones are also honored in a heart warming slide show presentation featuring favorite photos of their loved ones.
