WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME TO MOVE INTO AN ADULT COMMUNITY?

Lynda Schumacher, Director of PR at Rockynol, Akron LIVING WELL Magazine (formerly SENIOR Magazine)

Downsizing from your current home doesn’t have to be a burden. Indeed, it offers an opportunity to bring simplicity and ease to your life.

What are the benefits to moving to an adult community? Questions like this one are on the minds of many people 55 years and older. When considering a move to an adult community you will want to consider the advantages offered by a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC).

First, what does “continuing care” really mean? A CCRC offers many different levels of care for their residents, all on one campus. If your needs change, so will the level of assistance and services you receive. We asked Leslie Belfance, executive director of Rockynol, to explain,  “With independence as your goal, apartment style living allows you the freedom to enjoy your life without the worry or upkeep required with home ownership. With a CCR you have the benefit of continuum of care if you should find the need for additional service. If the time comes when being independent means you may need more services, then assisted living is available as well as more extended care.”

Offering many levels of care and services within a single community provides residents the confidence and security in knowing that if their circumstances change, the services needed are readily available. This is especially important to couples, should one spouse need additional services, the other remains close by, can visit any time of day and have peace-of-mind knowing that their loved-one is receiving the care they need. Belfance concludes,  “From the independence of apartment style living to assisted living, memory care and/or  skilled nursing, the residents will receive the services they need in a CCRC and will not have to move to another community. While most adult communities offer similar benefits, not every community is the same.”

MEET…Ginny MacIntosh lives in the independent apartments at Rockynol and shares “The most important factor for me was having a choice. From the moment I decided to live here, I was given every option, from the design of my apartment to all of the different activities available that I can choose to participate. I can take a watercolor class or Tai Chi in the morning and attend a seminar in the afternoon. I can decide whether I want a chef prepared meal or go out to dinner. Rockynol’s convenient location provides access to many different cultural events right in my own backyard. It’s really all about choice.” Ginny continues, “The other sparkle to living here is I have a community of friends that have become family and they are all just right outside my door.”
