“My family thought I was going to die.”

Jim, a father to three young children, was in a motorcycle accident on April 1. He was transported to the nearest trauma facility. “My family thought I was going to die.” After spending two months in the hospital, he arrived at Select Specialty Hospital with a tracheostomy and chest tubes, still requiring a ventilator.
“My children are my life.”
While at Select, Jim was weaned off of the ventilator and his tracheostomy was removed. His mother says that Select staff members went above and beyond. “They brought in a trifold board that Jim could put family pictures on. he nurses actually took the time to arrange the pictures into a collage for him.” Jim participated in all therapies with one goal in mind: his children. He was determined to get back home so that he could spend time with his children. “My children are my life.”
Question: When might someone need Select Specialty Hospital, a long-term acute care hospital?
Answer: If you or a loved one requires extended hospital care. An accident like the one described above, a wound that will not heal, someone having trouble coming off the ventilator after surgery are all examples of what Select successfully treats. Select Specialty Hospital is particularly good at caring for patients with multiple health issues occurring at the same time with someone like pneumonia, renal failure, and congestive heart failure.
Question: Is Select Specialty Hospital like a rehab hospital, skilled nursing facility or a long-term care facility?
Answer: No. Select is a hospital. Your Select Specialty Hospital here in Collin County (near Parker Road and the Tollway) is a highly equipped and skilled specialty hospital. All of Select’s nurses are registered nurses (RNs), and they are Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified. Select is one of the few specialty hospitals to have a licensed Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Though Select’s highly regarded physicians see their patients daily, a house physician is physically on-site at Select Specialty 24 hours a day in case of emergencies. All of Select Specialty’s respiratory therapists are registered as opposed to certified, a higher level of training. While Select Specialty Hospital is not a rehab hospital, it provides compassionate and aggressive physical, occupational, and speech therapy.
Question: Which physicians see the patients at Select Specialty Hospital?
Answer: Select Specialty Hospital has over 200 board-certified physicians covering a broad range of specialties. These physicians are physicians that practice at the local hospitals right here in Plano, Carrollton, Frisco, Mckinney and Allen. To find about a specific physician, please call 469- 892-1234.
At one point, Maureen’s daughters were told that she might not make it, and they should consider “letting her go.”
Maureen was enjoying life with her little dog, Molly. Her illness began with a cough and weakness that worsened to the point that her daughter called for an ambulance. Maureen was taken to a local hospital and diagnosed with necrotizing pneumonia. She also developed a severe intestinal infection and her body continued to weaken. Physicians discovered she had an ischemic bowel, so part of her bowel was removed and an ileostomy was performed. Following the surgery, Maureen was unable to wean from the ventilator. At one point, Maureen’s daughters were told that she might not make it, and they should consider “letting her go.” They knew their Mom and believed she would want to keep fighting, so they transferred her to Select Specialty Hospital. Maureen suffered a stroke shortly after she was admitted, but her family and care team at Select Specialty still did not give up. After a month of medical treatments and aggressive therapy, she weaned off of the ventilator and grew strong enough to go home. “I can’t say enough about Select, I was at death’s door and they saved me. They were outstanding, all of them.”
