SENIOR Magazine, home based franchise opportunity, offers tips on starting a home based business
I recently read an article on tips for starting a work from home business. The article pointed out how difficult it could be starting a home based business for someone who had been working in the corporate world for a long time. I remember how hard and frightening it was to make this move myself in 1983. For 10 years I had been in a cushy government job, but it was a dead in job that neither challenged nor excited me. Then I discovered something I was passionate about. I knew nothing about it, but found mentors to help me get started. It was terrifying to finally make the jump and leave the monthly check, benefits package and the “known” for the totally “unknown.” It was the best decision I ever made. Sure, there were ups and downs, but I never lost my passion or my vision of success. Telling you how great it is to own your own business is like telling you how great it is to have grandkids. You’ll never understand it until you experience it.
Times are very different now than they were for me in 1983. With layoffs, downsizing, bankruptcies, closures and 10% unemployment, many people have been forced into looking for options. Taking control of your own future is one of the most fulfilling things you can do in this or any economy.
If you are considering making a move from the corporate world to entrepreneurership, whether by circumstance or by choice, here are some great tips to consider as you look at your options.
1) Look for a company or product that suits your interests. You will have a hard time being successful if you do or sell something you don’t like, don’t believe in and are not passionate about. If you don’t like sales, stay away from opportunities that require your sales skills to be successful. If you enjoy socializing and being involved in your community, don’t look at opportunities where you sit in front of your computer and enter data. Don’t just “buy yourself a job.” And never believe claims that you can just set back and watch the money roll in. Successful entrepreneurs are hard workers.
2) Look for a company or product that is reliable. The last thing you want to get involved in is a hoax or scam. Make sure you are getting involved in a legitimate business. Look for a business or product with a track record of proven success and a proven product. Franchising greatly increases your odds of success over going it alone with a new, unproven idea or product.
3) Check out the company or products website. Make sure you’re dealing with an organization which is keeping up with current trends and represents itself well in its social media presence.
