Silver Key – Services Seniors Need to Live the Lives They Want

By Lorri Orwig, Director of Resource Development, Colorado Springs LIVING WELL Magazine

Say the name Silver Key and many people will tell you they know about us. They have seen our vans and buses on the roadways; they know we provide emergency assistance, and Meals on Wheels. What most people don’t know is that they can help with the good work we do.

Every week, Monday through Friday, the vans and buses of Silver Key Senior Services hit the road to take seniors to doctors’ appointments, the grocery store, social outings, and work. On any given day, roughly 175 – 200 seniors are driven around town to these vital appointments.  Unfortunately, the daily need for rides is closer to 250 seniors. That means that every day, 50 to 75 seniors are not able to leave their homes because we simply do not have the drivers to get them where they need to go.

Meals on Wheels is a daily delivery of a hot meal to a homebound senior, just waiting for that friendly face to arrive with the meal and provide some measure of companionship. These deliveries serve to reduce isolation and loneliness and increase emotional health for a senior, but also serve as an informal “wellness check,” and can be a great solution for caregivers who have difficulty meeting their loved one for mid-day meals. We serve over 200 seniors each day but know the need is greater and if we had more volunteers, we could serve more clients.

Here is where you can help, if you like to drive, want to meet new people, and have a few free hours each week, Silver Key Senior Services has volunteer jobs for you. Transportation drivers use our vans and small buses to take our clients to their appointments. Meals on Wheels drivers use their own vehicles to deliver hot meals to clients living independently. Lasting relationships are just one of the many rewards our clients and volunteers receive from this pairing of clients and drivers.
