Sinus Surgery

Sinus Surgery

The thought of having sinus surgery conjures up different images to different people, depending on the stories they have heard. Some have not been good experiences.  Recently, newer tools and minimally-invasive techniques have been developed for sinus surgery. One such system available in north Texas is Acclarent’s Balloon Sinuplasty System.

Sinus surgery basically involves a process that enlarges the narrow opening of the sinus where it connects to the nasal cavity to improve sinus drainage. Using balloon sinuplasty, the natural sinus openings can be accessed and dilated without the need to remove tissue or make incisions. This process is conceptually similar to cardiac angioplasty. The sinuplasty system also provides for the sinuses to be flushed to remove infected debris and mucus.

Balloon sinuplasty procedures have several advantages over traditional sinus surgery.  Sinuplasty patients typically have minimal discomfort, bleeding or other problems afterwards. The return to normal activity can be as soon as 48 hours. Also, this technique preserves normal sinus tissue instead of inducing scar tissue formation after tissue removal with traditional techniques.

Balloon sinuplasty is a safe and effective way to improve sinus function and reduce symptoms of disease. This procedure can be applied at the earliest indication in the course of therapy since it conserves normal sinus tissue. The sinuplasty system is a tool that can provide the desired results without the problems and inconveniences typically associated with traditional sinus surgery. Long term, the sinuses remain open and problems with sinusitis are greatly diminished.
