Patients with serious or complex medical conditions are often referred from a traditional hospital to Carrus Specialty Hospital, a long-term acute care facility (LTAC) developed to accommodate patients who are too ill, or with needs too great, for them to return home, or even to a rehabilitation facility or nursing home.

Patients come to Carrus Specialty Hospital for specialized treatment within an integrated plan of care, utilizing physicians, nurses, therapists, nutritionists, and others who work together to ensure exceptional patient care. Conditions frequently treated at Carrus include cardiovascular issues, respiratory infections, neurological conditions, or multi-system failures. Patients may have had a stroke, need intravenous antibiotics, require extensive wound care, or be ventilator dependent.

Larry Coffman, of McKinney, was admitted to Carrus Specialty Hospital with West Nile Virus.  “I have no recollection of the first days I was there,” says Coffman. “But the more aware and alert I became, the happier I was that I was at Carrus.”

Coffman says that what mattered most to him and his family was the staff’s intention to “get me healthy and back home; that was the goal and they never lost sight of it.”

Some, like Coffman, request Carrus for individualized treatment with the added benefit of remaining close to home, where friends and family can visit.

Because Carrus Hospitals include LTAC, rehabilitation, sleep lab, and outpatient services, they can meet a range of needs within a broad continuum of care.  Many patients, like Coffman, are able to move to the other side of the facility for services at Carrus Rehabilitation Hospital. The physician-owned facilities are housed in one 73,000 square foot building located on Highway 82 west in Sherman. Carrus Hospitals have private rooms and beautiful courtyards to enhance patient comfort and accommodate family needs.

Carrus Specialty Hospital is licensed by the state of Texas and the Texas Department of Health & Human Services. It is accredited by DNV.
