Treatment for Hip Pain

Treatment for Hip Pain

Hip osteoarthritis is a common diagnosis that many seniors fall victim to during the “Golden Years.” Since the hip is a weight bearing joint, osteoarthritis can cause significant problems such as pain and weakness. A healthy hip joint is crucial in order to maintain a high quality of life.  Maintaining good flexibility and strength in the affected hip are components to ensuring your lifestyle is not compromised.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Surgical treatment, such as a total hip replacement may be the only option for advanced osteoarthritis of the hip. Hip replacement surgery involves replacing the old arthritic joint with new components. Physical therapy is a major component in your return to independence following surgery.

Non surgical treatment includes initial rest from overuse and non-steroid anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed by your doctor. Losing weight and using a cane when walking help reduce some stress off the joint and decrease pain. Physical therapy may be prescribed by your doctor to help decrease pain and improve function.

HOW CAN PHYSICAL THERAPY HELP?

Physical therapy can provide an excellent recovery from hip osteoarthritis in many cases. Most individuals can return to many activities previously enjoyed. Your physical therapist will evaluate your condition, testing your strength, flexibility, gait mechanics and ability to perform functional activities. A treatment plan will be developed including proper exercise emphasizing the importance of strengthening all muscles that cross the given joint and surrounding areas of the hip. Stretching exercises, balance activities, improving gait mechanics and education of lifestyle modification are also important components that will be addressed during your physical therapy treatment.
