Dr. Isador Lieberman is a fellowship trained Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgeon board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. In his practice at the Texas Back Institute in Plano, TX, he specializes in the surgical treatment of spinal disorders.

His clinical interests include adolescent and adult scoliosis, spinal tumors, trauma, cervical and lumbar degenerative disorders (eg, herniated discs, spinal stenosis), musculoskeletal manifestations of multiple myeloma, spinal deformity correction, treatment of vertebral compression fractures (using kyphoplasty), and advanced spinal surgery using minimally invasive, robotic and endoscopic surgical techniques and technologies.

At the Texas Back Institute Dr. Lieberman has been instrumental in accelerating the research program and mentoring clinical spinal fellows. He established the Scoliosis and Spine Tumor Program, and while President, oversaw the clinical and administrative aspects of the organization.

Along with all his clinical and development activities, Dr. Lieberman established the Uganda Spine Surgery Mission which, for the past 18 years has been providing services to the less fortunate in Uganda who are afflicted with spinal ailments including tuberculosis and scoliosis. During this span of time, he and his team have been able to raise over one million dollars in donations, medications and supplies, and with a dedicated team of over 100 volunteers have operated on over 300 patients.

Academic Background

Dr. Lieberman completed medical school and his residency at the University of Toronto, and spine surgery and trauma surgical fellowships at the Toronto Hospital in Canada and at Queen’s Medical Center in Nottingham, England. He holds specialist certification as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (FRCSC) of Canada.

Dr. Lieberman held a full-time academic appointment at the University of Toronto and was part of the academic staff of the Toronto Hospital.

In 1997 he was recruited to the Cleveland Clinic, as a Staff Surgeon and earned the rank of Professor of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. Also, he was appointed Chairman, of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Center. Dr. Lieberman held other joint appointments at Cleveland Clinic Ohio in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Department of Neurosurgery, Taussig Cancer Center, Women’s Health Center, and the Cleveland Clinic Spine Institute.

In 2002, Dr. Lieberman received his Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Cleveland State University. In 2007, he transitioned his clinical and administrative duties to Cleveland Clinic Florida where he was appointed Chairman of the Spine Department.

Dr. Lieberman joined the Texas Back Institute and Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano in 2010 as Director of the Scoliosis and Spine Tumor Program, as well as Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics. In 2018, Dr. Lieberman was appointed President of the medical staff at Texas Health Plano Hospital. Also, in 2018 he was appointed to be the President of Texas Back Institute, PA. In 2019 Dr. Lieberman established the Scoliosis and Tumor Program at Medical City Frisco Hospital.

Research Interests

Dr. Lieberman’s research interests include clinical outcomes in spinal surgery, biomechanics of spinal implants, robotics for spinal surgery, gait analysis, and disc replacement technologies. He has conceived and developed a number of spinal surgery instruments and implants with over 35 US-issued patents.

He is nationally and internationally recognized for his contributions to minimally invasive/endoscopic spinal surgery, robotics and navigation for spine surgery, and his contributions to the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures.

Through research, clinical trials and surgical innovation, Dr. Lieberman was instrumental in advancing the use of minimally invasive spinal surgery techniques to treat herniated discs, as well as use of robotics to treat lumbar degenerative disorders, osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures, and scoliosis. He has over 140 peer-reviewed publications and more than 60 book chapters to his credit. Dr. Lieberman has presented his research through more than 400 invited lectures at universities, hospitals, national and international meetings.

Dr. Lieberman has edited three books, Minimal Access Spinal Surgery (2003), Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery 1st edition (2013) and Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery 2nd edition (2019). He was the senior editor for Advances in Osteoporotic Fracture Management and is a member of the editorial review boards for Spine, European Spine Society Journal, Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, and the Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques.

Continuing Medical Education

Dr. Lieberman is also recognized nationally and internationally for his contributions to continuing medical education (CME), teaching medical students and residents, and training clinical, as well as research spinal fellows.

Chaired more than 40 hands-on training courses teaching minimally invasive spinal surgical techniques to over 500 surgeons
Chaired or co-chaired 4 CME courses for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) to over 200 participants
Chairman of the AAOS Maintenance of Certification Review Course from 2010 to 2018 (over 250 participants per year) and served on AAOS’ Council of Education
Co-chair of the Cleveland Clinic Hands-on Spine Review Course and co-chaired the first combined Turkish Spine Society Hands-on Review Course
Clinical Leadership Roles

Since 1994, Dr. Lieberman has trained over 140 clinical spine fellows, 6 research post-graduate fellows, and currently supervises and mentors many post-graduate research spine fellows, medical students and orthopaedic residents.

In addition, Dr. Lieberman serves on a variety of Scientific Advisory Boards for prominent medical device manufacturers and start-up spine companies. In 2005, he founded the implant development company, Merlot OrthopediX, and in 2017 he founded a second medical device company, AGADA Medical Technologies. He is an inventor on over 40 issued United States Patents. He authored the first grant related to robotics in spinal surgery and has facilitated the widespread adoption of robotic surgery applications.
