If there is one constant in the travel business it is change. Travel is affected by literally everything on this planet from climate to political change. Just look at 2013. So far this year, the travel industry has been affected by the acquisition of American Airlines by US Air, the Carnival Cruise Line’s Triumph mishap, a record-breaking stock market performance, rising tensions in the Middle East and domestic terrorism. Camp. Remember the feeling? A little nervous at first––then joy. Abandon. Away from the demands of schedules, parents, homework––free to navigate canoe races, stitch crafty knapsacks, devour S’mores under the stars, and giggle with a newfound best friend the next bunk over, each of you blissfully exhausted. It was not much more than a year ago that then-Captain Scherle was living in rural Ontario as a member of the elite Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR); flying from one (frequently classified, occasionally covert) assignment to another, carrying a BlackBerry and an emergency pager wherever he went, and taking advantage of the long Canadian winters to cross country ski as much as he could. How could anything like this happen to anyone so young? At the age of 56, I found myself with a pain in the neck. Literally, my neck was killing me. It was mid-August when I found myself in urgent care. The pain then moved to my hips. I was in constant pain and had to give up a lot of organizing jobs and doing what I loved most, playing the trumpet. I saw a multitude of doctors, was given stronger and stronger pain medication and finally sent to specialists over an entire year. Finally, on Dec. 11, 2012, I had a total hip replacement. Finally, relief! Now, why should you know all this about me?
