On February 8, 2012 the US Food and Drug Administration issued a safety alert to physicians and consumers, which stated that the use of PPIs to reduce acid production by the stomach may be associated with an increased risk for developing persistent diarrhea and other GI symptoms due to infection with a bacteria called Clostridium difficile, or C. diff.
