-The flu is an infection of the respiratory tract caused by the influenza virus, but affects the whole body.
-Primary symptoms include: fever, fatigue, headache, chills, muscle aches, cough, sore throat and an overall ill feeling.
-The yearly spread of influenza virus typically occurs during the months of October through March.
-The influenza virus is very contagious. When someone who has it sneezes, coughs or even talks, the virus is expelled into the air and can be inhaled by anyone close by.
-People with the flu usually recover fully within one week.
Prevention
-GET VACCINATED! Just about everybody should get a flu shot each season. It only takes a few minutes and, if you have Medicare part B, you can get vaccinated with no out of pocket cost to you.
-Wash your hands often, drink plenty of water and get enough sleep.
-Don’t smoke, since smoking increases susceptibility to the flu.
-Limit alcohol intake.
-Exercise regularly and eat a balanced diet, including fruits and vegetables.
-Avoid crowds when possible and those known to have a cold or flu.
-If you become sick with the flu, please stay home to prevent the virus’s spread to others.
