Downsize While Upgrading

Tips for an Easy Move

By Chris Smith, ParkGate Retirement Community, North Dallas LIVING WELL Magazine

Are you thinking of downsizing or moving to a retirement community, but don’t know exactly where to begin? Does the thought of your upcoming move leave you feeling overwhelmed? You are not alone. Help is available. Consider enlisting the help of an experienced and knowledgeable Senior Move Manager who specializes in helping seniors and their families with the entire move process. Leave sorting possessions you have collected over the years and packing to the experts; and do your part for charity and the environment as well. It will save you a lot of work and worry – and your back will thank you for it.

Plan the move, allowing enough time that you and your family won’t feel rushed. Sorting through years of belongings is difficult and sometimes emotionally painful. Start with small tasks, such as going through a desk drawer or a box from the attic. Pick a room that has less sentimental attachment such as the bathroom or kitchen. Taking small steps enables you to get used to the idea of moving. This is a very important part of the process.

With a Senior Move Manager, you will have access to professionals who can help you design and plan your new space. They will help you determine what furniture will fit in your new home, and how it can be arranged to make your new space look and feel like home. By working through these pre-planning steps, downsizing can be a freeing exercise that leaves you with a light feeling in your heart. You will be amazed at how easy and stress-free the actual move will be.

Be sure you contact friends, family and neighbors and inform them of your new address and contact information (e-mail, phone number, etc.). Staying in touch is important during this transition.

Inform your bank, credit card companies and businesses as well as magazines or newspapers you subscribe to of the change. Notify the post office and have your mail forwarded for at least six months so you have your bases covered.

Senior Focused Relocations is one of the companies that has helped some residents at ParkGate Retirement Community move successfully to their new home. Generally, the same company that has helped you prepare for your move will now professionally pack your belongings, carefully move everything to your new home, and then, the best part – they will unpack all the boxes for you.

If desired, experienced employees will neatly put your belongings into cupboards, closets and drawers. They will hang your artwork and mirrors, connect your electronics, and even make your bed! Other services are also available – such as installing flat panel TVs or arranging delivery of items to family members. Senior Move Managers can do as little or as much as you would like.  All you have to do is come in at the end of the day, kick up your feet and relax!

We find that ParkGate residents adapt to their new environment quickly because we’re small enough to address their needs, give each resident the time and attention they deserve and let them know they’re valued. Our devoted staff is passionate about what they do and are friendly, genuine, caring people.
