Too Busy to Exercise?

Indianapolis North LIVING WELL Magazine

Let’s face it; we’re all time-starved. Our culture is conditioning us to multi-task and squeeze more into each day. Ever think to yourself, “Wow, there just aren’t enough hours in the day?” How often do you end the day wishing you had done more? Stress is a very real factor in our lives. Have you ever tried exercise as a way to reduce stress? Health professionals in all fields profess exercise as the primary tool and most effective means to reduce stress and lead a healthier, longer life. Yet, why don’t we heed this advice that is overwhelmingly true? I’ll tell you why…because there is always a tomorrow to get started. There are a finite number of tomorrows. Your tomorrow should be today.

If your personal health is not a priority to you, it can become a burden to you and ultimately to your family. Too many times, we place our personal health on the back burner as a low priority while we take care of others. This doesn’t have to be your reality. You probably have a career to nurture and a family to raise. You can do all that and still be active on a daily basis, and make your personal health a priority.

One way to make exercise easy for you to do and eliminate a ton of common excuses is to set up a home fitness room. Even if you don’t have a whole room to dedicate, you can likely find a corner or an area to place some equipment. The equipment you choose doesn’t have to be large or expensive. Of course, you can set up the ultimate home gym with equipment similar to what is in the health club. Or, you can set it up with a few accessories. Whether you spend a few hundred or a few thousand, it is possible, and you can do it.

What you need in your home fitness room is the ability to do cardio, strength, core and flexibility exercises. For cardio, a treadmill, elliptical, recumbent bike or rowing machine is a great choice. For strength exercises, there are a wide range of choices that include machines, free-weights and benches, dumbbells, resistance bands and tubes. Next, and the most often overlooked aspect of a successful exercise regimen, is flexibility and core-strength training. All you need is a little knowledge and an open space to stretch. In recent years, core-stability training has been proven to be foundational to any good plan. All you need are some accessories such as a medicine ball, stability ball, balance disk or a kettle-bell.

Before you begin a new exercise program, it is always good to consult a trusted health professional. When you’re ready to make a change in your life, make the decision and don’t look back. Wouldn’t it be awesome if you had made that decision three months ago? Imagine how good you might feel and look today if you had. Food for thought…Live well.
