Experiencing nature – even through a window – can be a powerful motivator. Jimmy Herpeche even credits the turtle in the courtyard pond with lifting his spirits while he was a patient at Carrus Specialty Hospital. The facility, designed to enhance patient comfort and reduce stress, includes four landscaped courtyards and a koi-filled pond at the edge of the property.

When Jimmy first arrived at Carrus Specialty Hospital, he couldn’t move his legs. He recalls the day he moved his toes and what a celebration that caused. “Everybody was cheering for me,” Jimmy says. “I am not exaggerating when I say that there was not one person at Carrus who didn’t treat me like I was a member of the family.”

Carrus Specialty Hospital provides integrated care for patients who have a serious illness or injury. Patients may be dependent on a ventilator, need extensive wound care, or require treatment for respiratory failure. Often their medical needs are serious and complex.

Offering encouragement and hope, the staff members at Carrus provide patients and families with the ultimate caregiving experience. “The nurses were so attentive, even checking to be sure all the wrinkles were out of my covers,” says Jimmy. “They’d turn the pillow for me so I’d have a cool place to lay my head.”

With the added advantage of many physician-owners, Carrus Specialty Hospital offers a practical combination of expert partnerships. Staff members include nurses, therapists, dieticians, social workers, and others committed to patient care.

After being released from his stay in both Carrus Specialty and Rehabilitation Hospitals, Jimmy eagerly anticipated a return visit and planned one as soon as he could. “I told the person driving me to get ready because when I went in that door being able to walk with a walker, everybody was going to cry!” Jimmy says. “I was happy every morning I woke up there, because that was one more day I didn’t think I was going to get.”
