Carrus Specialty Hospital is a long-term acute care facility specializing in comprehensive care for critically ill patients for an extended period of time. Many patients come to Carrus from intensive care units in traditional community hospitals.

“As a long-term acute care hospital, we provide the often-needed bridge for patients who are being discharged from the hospital, but are too ill to be cared for in a non-acute setting,” says Chief Nursing Officer Diane Swenson. “Our patients benefit from a multidisciplinary team approach tailored to meet their needs, including exceptional nursing care with physician supervision for an average of about 25 days.”

Carrus serves seriously ill patients with conditions caused by diseases such as diabetes, congestive heart failure, vascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cancer, or severe trauma. Often, patients’ conditions have been complicated by multiple medical problems.

The Carrus professional team works to restore the patient to the highest level of independence possible. Many patients are able to return to their previous lifestyle. Each patient is different and the discharge plan is developed from the individual’s needs and capabilities.

“Our patients are often referred to us by their physician, surgeon or medical specialist,” Swenson says. “Our hospital liaisons then visit the patient and assess his or her medical condition and care needs. Even if patients are hospitalized in another city, they can still request Carrus in order to recover closer to home, which is often more convenient for their families. The Carrus clinical hospital liaison (903-870-2699) can facilitate a transfer, assisting with transportation and post-discharge needs.
